Special effects had developed hugely since T2, Industrial Light and Magic blew audiences away in the summer of 1999 with the spectacle of Star Wars: Episode I and, to my mind at least, the far superior effects work on The Mummy which definitely set an incredible standard in action movies.

The turn of the century had seen the return of the science fiction action movie in a big and certainly reformative way. The second important point about the budget is that it went some way to contend with the action movie landscape of the time. The first is that it allowed the franchise to continue its tradition of high production values, which led to some very memorable moments in the movie, strengthening its place within the franchise. This is definitely a strength of the movie for two reasons. This definitely was not the case with T3, the producers had raised the biggest budget of any movie made at the time, a total of 187 million dollars. Many of these productions didn’t live up to the craft of the original movies that they spun off from. In many ways any further entry into the Terminator franchise could have been a cheaply made cash-in production, especially as many of the great action movie franchises were finding new audiences with the emergent straight to DVD market. The Dark Conspiracy Behind The Terminator’s Origins So let’s take a look back to see if this entry into the Terminator timeline is a future worth saving. What audiences received was Terminator 3: Raise of the Machines, a film that turned a profit and received mostly favourable reviews at the time of its release but which, over time, has not necessarily dated well with the franchise’s fanbase. Making the third film without his presence would, therefore, be an uphill battle to create something as culturally significant. Much of the reason for that was Cameron’s reputation as a visionary director. T1 and T2 are two films which are so important that they would go on to define the decades they were made in. The impact of the Terminator films can’t be underestimated. This led to a huge problem for the franchise, a Terminator movie without its creator.

It’s also a serviceable sequel in the Terminator series that upholds the franchise’s quality while still including new ideas.By the mid-1990s James Cameron was interested in returning to the director’s chair to make a third installment of the Terminator franchise but due to the financial and legal wranglings of Hollywood he was unable to. If you’re looking for a big-budget science-fiction flick with some notable action sequences, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines gets the job done. Despite the change of director, the movie still has that signature Terminator action, complete with one-liners, explosions, and a slice of sex appeal.Īlthough the characters and overall complexity of the narrative feel dumbed down, it’s still an enjoyable story that works for what the movie is trying to accomplish. Overall, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines is better than most major movie sequels. Either way, it clashes with the more serious narrative tone, resulting in some unintended comedy. At times, the movie resorts to slapstick comedy, which works to varying degrees. The script is also a bit sillier this time around, with the Terminator finding himself in some especially silly scenarios. Nick Stahl does a decent job as John Connor, but fails to live up to the strength of the role’s legacy.

The character of Kate Brewster is exceptionally under-baked and is often portrayed as a simple damsel in distress. As previously mentioned, the script and characters suffer from poor development and occasionally goofy lines. That said, Terminator 3 is not without its faults. Just like in those films, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines has a good variety of action, including awesome vehicle chases, intense gunfights, and brutal hand-to-hand combat. The return of Arnold Schwarzenegger as the older Terminator model is also appreciated, as it makes the focal action consistently reminiscent of the original two films.
